Open Education Update: MOOCs

This week the European Commission released a paper based on discussions with experts last May on Open Education. In it the parameters of the education experience of the learner of the future are proposed along the following conceptual framework:

  • Guided journey – students tread fairly traditional paths overseen by institutions
  • Guided discovery – institutions are hubs for research and learning
  • Self-guided journey – institution provide content and certification, but not structure
  • Self-guided discovery – anyone can pursue any learning independently

In this paper, the Commission attempt to articulate the role of MOOCs and account for the drop in support for the format. I’m looking forward to the next paper that deals with schools. Even in 2030 I doubt we’ll see any great differences – particularly not efficiencies – in the teacher-student dynamic.
